Sports Partnership

Introduction

The Pensby School Sport Partnership offers us a fantastic opportunity to work together to provide the best possible P.E. and school sport experiences for all children, regardless of age, gender and standard of performance.

Funded by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), the Pensby Partnership is one of 400 such partnerships across England, which the Government plans to create by 2006. As part of it's PE, School Sport and Club Links Strategy (PESSCL), the overall objective of the programme is to ensure that all children take part in "a minimum of 2 hours of High quality PE and School Sport within and beyond the curriculum" (Public Service Agreement).

This page is designed to give you:

  • A brief overview of the PESSCL strategy
  • An outline of the 6 main aims / benefits of the SSCo Partnership Programme, and a map of the schools involved in the Partnership.

We Need Your Help To Make The Partnership Develop And Grow!

Once you have read this flyer, if you feel that you, or an organisation that you work for, could help us, in any of the following ways, to encourage children to lead 'healthier, more active lifestyles', then we would love to hear from you:

  • 'Adopt a school' or family of schools
  • Share some of your time or expertise
  • Volunteer to become an organiser, leader, official or coach
  • Or offer assistance in any other way, such as sponsoring a festival or donating resources

The Aims Of The School Sport Partnership Programme

Out of Hours School Learning e.g.

  • A broader range of activities, in particular for disaffected children or those whose needs are not currently met

School / Club Links e.g.

  • Better sharing of information / clearer pathways
  • Establishing accessible satellite sections at High School sites

Coaching and Leadership e.g.

  • Appropriate Professional Development for staff
  • More leadership opportunities for students

Raising Standards e.g.

How Does The Partnership Work And Who's Involved?

Each partnership is run by a full time Partnership Development Manager (PDM) who is based at a Sports College and liases with Headteachers, Heads of P.E., Sports Development Officers and other key strategic partners. Each High School is attached to 5 or 6 Primary Schools and a P.E. teacher is released to support them by acting as a School Sport Co-ordinator (SSCo) for 2 ½ days a week. A Specialist Link Teacher (SLT) is employed to act as cover and share good practice. Finally, a Primary Link Teacher (PLT) is appointed in each Primary School and they have access to 12 days supply cover per year to support their colleagues and help raise standards in P.E. and School Sport.

The PESSCL Strategy

The PESSCL Strategy was launched in October 2002 and represents an unprecedented investment of £459 million into P.E. and sport by the Government. Why?

A Growing Bank Of Evidence Suggests That PE And Sport Can Improve:

  • Student concentration, commitment and self-esteem; leading to higher attendance and better behaviour and attainment
  • Fitness levels, thereby reducing the risk of obesity and conditions like coronary heart disease in later life
  • Success in international competition

The School Sport Co-ordinator programme is one of 8 programmes aimed at achieving the Government's Public Service Agreement of 2 hours high quality P.E. and sport. These include:

  • Specialist Sports Colleges
  • Gifted & Talented
  • QCA 'Good Practice' PE and School Sport Investigations
  • Step into Sport (recruiting young volunteers)
  • Professional Development
  • School / Club Links
  • Swimming
